Shawn Covey, Director of Inpatient Services, has been named the recipient of Hocking Valley Community Hospital’s Excellence in Leadership Award.
Shawn has been a nurse for 18 years. She came to HVCH to lead the behavioral health unit and has since transitioned to the director of Inpatient Services.
“She has taken the inpatient team above and beyond expectations,” HVCH CEO Stacey Gabriel said. “She has brought a focus on education and training, coupled with building a team-based culture. She has developed new opportunities for staff to gain valuable clinical training – from cardiac monitoring to rapid recognition and rapid patient response. Shawn has created a shared web page for her team that includes education and a central location to share all important updates and information.
Shawn is in regular communication with the inpatient team to make sure staff are getting wrap-up notes from the week. She has worked to engage other departments and has a problem-solving mindset. She does not get easily flustered and stays calm in every situation. Shawn also serves as a mentor to new directors and shares best practices from a management perspective. We are grateful for Shawn’s expertise and dedication to HVCH.”
HVCH’s 25-bed inpatient unit employs more than 50 RNs, STNAs, LPNs, Hospitalist Doctors, and Nurse Practitioners. The Inpatient Department is comprised of inpatient rooms, the Special Care Unit (ICU) and Transitional Care Unit, which is short-term stay program designed to serve patients who are transitioning from a phase of illness or recovery and no longer require acute care services.
Inpatient staff have an opportunity to participate in the hospital’s Grow Your Own program, which allows employees to obtain certification, such as STNA, while earning experience on the job. For a list of current openings in the HVCH Inpatient Department, visit https://hvch.applicantpro.com/jobs/.
