Hocking Valley Community Hospital Radiology Department is now offering CT Calcium Scoring exams to help detect if treatment is needed to prevent heart attack or stroke.
This screening test is a non-invasive, non-contrast, cat scan of the chest, specifically of the heart. The Calcium Scoring exam clearly identifies calcification in coronary arteries that have plaque buildup.
“We are excited to utilize the technology of our new CT scanner to offer an important screening tool for our patients. Cardiac conditions can be identified early, provide an opportunity to begin treatment and reduce negative outcomes with a simple 15-minute test,” Faith Todd, HVCH Director of Radiology, said.
A calcium scoring test can assist healthcare providers in making treatment decisions for patients with borderline risk of heart disease. It may be suggested for patients between ages 40 and 70 and at increased risk for heart disease, but with no clinical symptoms.
People at increased risk include those who:
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Use tobacco products now or in the past
- Have a history of high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure
- Have overweight (higher than 25) or obese (higher than 30) Body Mass Index
- Have an inactive lifestyle
- Have other, nontraditional risk factors
“Once completed, a coronary artery calcium score is generated. The number is based on the amount of plaque, age, race/ethnicity, and gender of the patient, which helps calculate the risk of a heart attack or other cardiovascular event,” Todd explained.
The screening tool is recommended to be repeated every three to five years for high-risk patients who score in the normal range to determine if risk remains low. The patient’s provider can order the exam and any follow-ups with the HVCH Radiology Department.
